AUDIOVISUALS
unhold generative
Unhold Generative is a media art project started in 2021. It mainly consists in a combination of two techniques for audiovisual production: Generative Sequencing and Audiovisual Vector Synthesis.

Generative Sequencing uses different algorithmic methods to produce realtime compositions and improvisations. Sound events and effects are structured and interconnected within a time grid to generate more or less complex musical outputs. In this project Generative Sequencing is also applied to the visual part of the game.

Audiovisual Vector Synthesis uses graphical vector curves for visual and auditive production. The curves can have any design and are computed as a set of X/Y values (a vector is a pair of values, X and Y). They are visually represented by a point of light shifting through its X/Y values. The shifting is done by audio signals of electronic or acoustic origin. This enables the combination of computer-generated content and human-generated live input to create dynamic interactive performances and installations.
The audio signal used for the visualisation of the curves can be manipulated by vector operations (vector synthesis) at audio signal level to achieve transformations and movements of surprising aesthetic quality.
Thereby, the visual curve is simultaneously output as sound, with the momentary X and Y values routed to the stereo channels of the sound system. This technique produces results in which the visual is very closely and directly linked to the auditive experience.
The curves can be generated on the computer (I have mostly used L-Systems to generate fractal curves so far), but also painted by hand, generated by mouse click, by cutting out a 3d model, analysing graphics, etc.
